This “Knit to Fit Workshop” book began as a challenge to the members of Twisted Sisters: “Knit an original sweater by altering a basic drop shoulder pattern.” The results of that challenge are shown in the book though pictures, instructions, and encouragements to create your own original sweater. A myriad of options are included for necklines, sleeve types and direction garment is knit whether top to bottom, bottom to top, or side to side.
After a brief synopsis of the two parts of the Knitter Fitter System, Lynne lays the foundation with several chapters which discuss yarns and gauge. She includes a wonderful chart as a help in deciding which needles to use to produce varying types of “fabric” with the same yarn. Specific directions are given to determine the amount of yarn needed. There are tips included throughout the book, many of which pertain specifically to the area in which they are found, but also many which are general in nature.
The two parts of the “Knitter Fitter System” are then looked at in depth. The Fitter List to be filled out seems overwhelming at first glance, but when broken down step by step, each part fits together to form a very useful whole. 18 measurements are to be taken or obtained from a favorite sweater. There are also spaces for other details such as yarn weight and gauge. The second step is a sweater map in which all the pieces which will be knit are placed in a diagram showing exactly how they will join together and giving final measurements for each piece.
They actual “patterns” included begin with a paragraph describing the garment followed by a section in which the designer/knitter gives details about the yarn and the process of that particular design. The actual instructions are unlike any other knitting book. There are no row by row instructions. Instead an order of working is given with entries such as “knit front” and “determine sleeve dimensions” (with the aid of the fitter list).
The book is rounded out by a gallery of additional original projects undertaken. The front and back are shown and a brief commentary by the designer/knitter is included. A source list of artisan yarns is also included.
