“The scarves in this book expand our idea of what a scarf can be.”  This quote from the introduction sums up what Scarf Style has to offer.  Using some very well known designers, as well as some lesser known ones, Pam Allen has pulled together an eclectic mix of patterns.  Most are long scarves, but there are a few other shapes, even a “turtleneck with sleeves”.  Techniques included span the range from colorwork to cables to lace to filet crochet to beadwork.  For the adventurous there is a “Color on Color” scarf with the pattern taking up 13 pages.  For those looking for something easier, the “Stripes and Baubles” scarf consists of long, narrow strips joined together at random places with knotted loops.  And for those looking for a truly “out there” experience, the “‘Shippo’ Tail” Scarf uses two unique yarns, one of linen paper and one a combination of silk and stainless steel.  Many scarves are extra long.  Some of them have self fringes, knotted fringes or even a knitted fringe.
While scarves are often a knitter’s first project knit in endless rows of garter stitch, these patterns show that even the most advanced knitter can enjoy the challenge of knitting scarves.  A design notebook is included with a myriad of instructions for a truly creative one of a kind scarf.  Many of the designers have also mentioned the inspiration for their pattern (these vary from such things as Celtic metalwork to hot air balloons); a feature which can also provide food for thought for those wishing to express their creativity.
The patterns are well photographed, though some could have shown more detail.  In the latter part, some of the photos and patterns are reversed, placing the photo from one scarf at the beginning of the directions for another.
